New Republican budget threatens Medicaid for 72 million

A new House Republican budget plan calls for $880 billion in spending cuts over the next decade.

WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — A new budget proposal in Washington could mean major changes to your health insurance coverage.

Millions of low-income and disabled Americans could lose their health insurance, NBC reports.

A new House Republican budget plan calls for $880 billion in spending cuts over the next decade. Experts say Medicaid, which provides health coverage for 72 million people, is the likely target.

Medicaid helps low-income families, children, people with disabilities, and even covers nearly half of all births in the U.S.

But with less federal funding — states may struggle to keep the program running.

That could lead to cuts in coverage, fewer services, or lower payments to doctors and hospitals.

Republicans argue they are only cutting waste and fraud.

But, experts say past attempts to cut Medicaid used the same language—while still slashing benefits.

The plan isn’t final yet, but if Congress moves forward, millions of Americans could see major changes to their health coverage.
