CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Water discovered a significant sewage leak on Friday near 2227 Wensley Drive, releasing over 1,000 gallons of untreated wastewater into Little Sugar Creek.
The spill happened because of roots and debris blocking the sewer system, the city said. It’s in the Catawba River Watershed, which could impact connected waterways.
“A majority of wastewater overflows can be prevented with your help,” said Cam Coley from Charlotte Water.
Coley stressed that even products marked as “flushable” can cause serious problems. These items don’t break down properly in sewer pipes and can lead to major blockages that cause sewage to spill into local waterways.
