The suspect was airlifted to Charlotte following a pursuit that ended when he ran over a Monroe police officer, officials said.
UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A stretch of U.S. 74 in Union County is closed after a police chase ended when a suspect shot himself, investigators said.Â
The Union County Sheriff’s Office said the highway was closed near Secrest Avenue, which is between Monroe and Wingate. Deputies said the road was shut down due to a heavy police presence and investigation. The agency said there was no threat to the community and that the situation was an “isolated incident.”Â
A city of Monroe spokesperson confirmed to WCNC Charlotte that a Monroe Police officer was hurt when he was run over by the suspect during a pursuit. The officer suffered injuries to his leg and is expected to be OK, according to police.Â
The suspect was airlifted to a Charlotte hospital after allegedly shooting himself. Detectives haven’t identified the suspect or given any further updates on their condition. It’s unclear what led to the pursuit.Â
