Monroe murder suspect arrested after traffic stop, police say

MONROE, N.C. — A Monroe man is facing multiple charges in connection with a shooting that happened last month, police said. 

Monroe Police responded to a shooting along Maurice Street around 11 p.m. on July 17. When officers arrived, they found a man who had been shot multiple times. The victim was taken to Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and is expected to recover. 

Detectives identified 37-year-old Damien Maurice Smith as the suspect in the shooting. He was arrested on July 31 near the intersection of Rogers Road and Wesley Chapel after being pulled over by a Union County deputy, police said. Smith was charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and possession of a firearm by a felon. 

Smith was taken to the Union County jail was denied bond. No further details were provided by police.
