ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 12-year-old boy is missing after he was swept away by floodwaters that overtook an Albemarle County roadway Tuesday evening.

At about 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, Albemarle County fire and police units were called to the area of Newton Road and Valley Green Drive for a swift water rescue.

They were dispatched after a 911 caller reported that a 12-year-old boy, who was walking outside, was swept away by rushing water from a nearby creek that had flooded into the roadway.

First responders spent over three hours searching for the child before they had to pause the search due to limited visibility. The decision was made to ensure the safety of all of those involved in the effort, fire officials said.

The search will resume during daylight hours on Wednesday, May 14.
