The incident happened on Highway 152 in Rowan County east of Mooresville.
ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — A man was arrested after investigators say he shot at first responders and stole a fire department pickup truck.
Rowan County emergency services and the Atwell Fire Department responded to a service call for an unresponsive driver near the intersection of Highway 152 and Shinn Farm Road on Sunday around 11:46 a.m.Â
Paramedics found Miguel Angel Ramirez in the vehicle and determined he was impaired rather than suffering a medical problem, according to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities called the North Carolina Highway Patrol to the scene.
Ramirez fired a shot at first responders at the scene while they were waiting. He then stole a fire department pickup truck after the shooting. He crashed into a vehicle and then drove into a nearby soybean field where he was arrested.
Nobody was hit by the gunfire but one Rowan County paramedic was injured while falling to the ground. They were treated and released from the hospital.
Ramirez suffered minor injuries from the crash with the other vehicle.Â
Investigators have not said what charges Ramirez faces.Â
This situation remains under investigation by the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.
Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots. Â
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
