The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect fired shots at medical personnel after they found him unresponsive in his car on Sunday.
ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — A man is being investigated for firing shots at fire and EMS personnel as they responded to an unconscious person in a car, according to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.Â
A release from the law enforcement office said Rowan County emergency services and the Atwell Fire Department arrived at the intersection of Shinn Farm Road and Highway 152 after receiving reports that Miguel Angel Ramirez was unresponsive in his car.
Upon arrival, officials determined Ramirez was probably impaired and not unconscious because of a medical condition. While they waited for NC Highway Patrol, deputies said Ramirez allegedly took out a gun and fired a shot. One medical official was injured in the arm from falling while trying to find cover.
Deputies said Ramirez then stole a fire department pickup truck, “which he drove erratically.” He then ran into another car at the intersection of Highway 152 and Unity Church Road and drove off the road across a field and into a yard. He was then captured by deputies.
The gun, which the sheriff’s department said Ramirez stole, was found by a K9 in the field. Ramirez was mildly injured from the crash, while the driver of the car he hit was unharmed.
The injured medical official was taken to a hospital.
