A Lee County man is in custody after leading sheriff’s deputies on a chase inside the gated Carolina Trace community.

Anthony Edgar Craig, 36, of Quince Loop in Sanford faces multiple charges after the incident.

Deputies responded Saturday to Quail Hollow Road in the Carolina Trace community after receiving a report that a suspicious person was attempting to break into a vehicle. Responding deputies also learned that another vehicle had been stolen from Bluebird Drive, which connects to Quail Hollow Road.

On arrival, deputies located the stolen vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. Craig was allegedly in the vehicle and attempted to flee. After a brief chase, Craig got out of the vehicle and ran into the woods. He was apprehended “after a short struggle,” according to Sheriff Brian Estes.

Estes said Craig was previously suspected in connection with a vehicle theft, burglary of a home, and breaking into several vehicles in the same area in December. He is charged with fleeing to elude arrest, larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, breaking and entering a motor vehicle, resisting a public officer and failing to heed siren and lights in connection with the chase. He was placed in the Lee County Jail under $15,000 secured bond, but posted bail and was released.

On Tuesday, deputies charged him again with five counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, three counts of attempted breaking and entering a motor vehicle, larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, two counts of misdemeanor larceny, two counts of larceny of a firearm, first degree burglary, and safecracking in connection with the crimes from December. After his second arrest, he was jailed without bond.
