Anthony Walker will spend up to six-and-a-half years in prison for a deadly shooting in April 2019.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man was sentenced for a 2019 deadly shooting on Monday.

Anthony QuShawn Walker, 31, was sentenced to 58-82 months in prison for the death of 40-year-old Damian Johnson.

In April 2019, witnesses said there was a fight at a party inside a home on Catherine Simmons Avenue and Johnson jumped in to break it up but was shot.

Police arrived at the scene and located Johnson with a gunshot wound. He was transported to the hospital by Medic, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Marcia Kovalchik said she and her family are still empty after Johnson’s death.

“We came here today for closure, and unfortunately, we didn’t get that,” Kovalchik said. “I wanted to know why. I wanted to know why maybe it would make it a little easier, maybe it would soften the blow a little bit.”

Inside the courtroom, Walker turned towards Kovalchik and her family and apologized. Kovalchik said that the apology was left upstairs.

“Sometimes taking your personal feelings out of a situation and understanding that apologies is for the other person not for you,” Kovalchik said. “Our families are being placed and tied to a number and that’s something you can’t place a value on.”
