Da’Reem Dante Gaskin was found guilty of killing 28-year-old Deante Brown.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A jury has convicted a Charlotte man to nearly three decades in prison for a 2020 homicide.
The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office shared Tuesday the jury had ruled Da’Reem Dante Gaskin guilty in the killing of 28-year-old Deante Brown. Gaskin, who is now 31, will spend between 276-344 months behind bars and has to pay restitution to Brown’s family.
Gaskin was tried for first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle in operation. The jury found him guilty of the lesser second-degree charge and possession of a firearm, but ruled not guilty for the third charge.
Brown was shot on Sept. 6, 2020. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said at the time he arrived for treatment at a Charlotte hospital, but died of his injuries. Gaskin was arrested about a week later.
The District Attorney’s office added further narrative to the events of that night. The office said Gaskin had a disagreement with a female friend, who went to her home and told her boyfriend – identified as Brown – about what was going on. Brown called Gaskin and told him to meet with him on West Trade Street so they could fight.
The office then said Brown was brought to the area by a friend and showed Gaskin he was unarmed for the fight. However, Gaskin took aim and shot at Brown, who ran off. Gaskin kept firing and hit Brown several times in the back as he got into his friend’s car. The friend then took Brown to the hospital.
Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots. Â
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
If your loved one was impacted by this incident, WCNC Charlotte hopes to make this process less painful with our More Than A Number initiative.
