Horan was shot and killed at the Food Lion on Lawndale Drive on Monday.
GREENSBORO, N.C. — The man accused of shooting and killing Michael Horan at the Food Lion on Lawndale Drive in Greensboro on Monday was detained using a pair of the fallen officer’s handcuffs, according to the Greensboro Police Department.
Horan was the first to respond to a call referencing a man with a firearm inside the Food Lion. The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) said Horan made contact with 34-year-old Tarell McMillian, who after a brief struggle pulled out a gun and shot the officer before driving away from the scene.
A few hours later, law enforcement officers found McMillian driving in Johnston County. Johnston County and Sampson County deputies pursued the suspect in a high-speed chase before the North Carolina State Highway Patrol took over, the SBI said.
Johnston County and Sampson County deputies pursued McMillian in a high-speed chase before the North Carolina State Highway Patrol took over, the SBI said. Troopers initiated a PIT maneuver and stopped the suspect vehicle on I-40 at the Duplin County line. He was then taken into custody without incident.
“After Mr. McMillian was taken into custody by our partner agencies in Duplin County, he was detained until our officers could arrive and transport him back to Guilford County to be booked. He made that trip in a pair of handcuffs that belonged to Officer Horan,” the Greensboro Police Department wrote on Facebook.
McMillian made his first court appearance virtually on Thursday. He faces up to life in prison or the death penalty if convicted of first-degree murder.
