NEW HANOVER COUNTY — Laney High School English teacher Hannah Moon has been named the 2025 Burroughs Wellcome Fund Southeast Region Teacher of the Year.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with degrees in English Literature and Education, Moon has been a cornerstone of the New Hanover County Schools community for two decades. She earned her National Board Certification in 2022 and currently teaches English II, English IV, and Advanced Placement (AP) Literature.
“I love and believe in education,” Moon said in a press release. “I believe in Laney High School. I believe in New Hanover County. I believe in Wilmington. And I really believe in room 136, where everybody succeeds every day. Even if it’s a small win or a big win—they are going to win in room 136.”
Over her 20-year career, Moon has served as a leader both inside and outside the classroom. Her roles include department chair, mentor teacher, book club advisor, and partnership teacher for pre-service educators.
“Mrs. Moon is an exceptional educator who embodies the qualities and dedication that this prestigious honor represents,” said NHCS Interim Superintendent Dr. Chris Barnes. “Through her innovative teaching practices, leadership roles, and community engagement, she has demonstrated a remarkable ability to inspire students, foster a positive school culture, and make a lasting impact on those around her.”
