BALD HEAD ISLAND – A science-focused K through eighth-grade school was awarded a $50,000 donation last week from one of its residents insurance CEO.
Doug Witcher is a part-time resident of Bald Head Island and the founder of the insurance network SmartChoice and Douglas S. Witcher Family Foundation. Witcher contributed to the Bald Head Island Academy Foundation for operational expenses.
According to BHIA Board Chair Dr. Louis Vaickus, Witcher’s donation is the largest single donation in the school’s history.
Bald Head Island Academy is a tuition-based private school focused on teaching science and sustainability to children ages 5 through 15. Located at the beach, BHIA provides students with hands-on learning experiences that emphasize earth sciences and maritime ecosystems.
BHIA co-founder and Interim Head of School Sheree Vaickus stated that Witcher’s donation called it “a life-changing moment.”
“Supporting education is an investment in our future,” Witcher stated. “Together, we can create opportunities for children to flourish and realize their potential, despite their challenges, whatever they may be. I invite all with means and who could to support BHI Academy; it’s more than a school, it’s a way to preserve BHI’s Legacy.”
The school has plans to build a permanent charter school for the island and is grateful for advocacy from donors like Witcher.
