Inmate killed in South Carolina prison, officials say

Officials say the inmate was stabbed when a handful of inmates started fighting in a common area of their housing unit.

RIDGEVILLE, S.C. — An inmate at a South Carolina prison died on Monday afternoon, according to officials with the South Carolina Department of Corrections. 

Devin Javonne Wilson, an inmate at Lieber Correctional Institution, died at the Ridgeville prison Monday afternoon. 

Officials say Wilson, 29, was stabbed when a handful of inmates started fighting in a common area of their assigned housing unit. 

Three other inmates have been taken to a local hospital for what are believed to be non‐life‐threatening injuries. 

Wilson was pronounced dead at the prison. An autopsy will be performed.  

Wilson’s death is being investigated as a suspected homicide by the SCDC Inspector General’s office with assistance from the S.C. Law Enforcement Division Crime Scene unit and the Dorchester County Coroner.
