During Reconstruction, a community of free Black residents formed a “kingdom” in Western North Carolina. They called it “The Kingdom of the Happy Land.” Novelist Dolen Perkins Valdez’s new book, Happy Land, gives a fictionalized account of this little-known Appalachian history.
