Impacts from winter weather expected Friday and Saturday

What we know about possible impacts from a storm later this week.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The timing for a potential winter storm this week is coming into more clarity, according to the Brad Panovich and the WCNC Charlotte Weather Impact team.

When to expect weather impacts

The developing storm system could bring a mix of rain, snow and sleet to the Carolinas late Friday and early Saturday.

“We’ve been watching this pattern since last week,” Panovich said in his extended forecast vlog on the WCNC Charlotte Weather IQ YouTube channel. “The timing is coming into a little bit better, clearer picture.”

Impacts you can expect

“I’m not [yet] comfortable talking about whether it’s snow, sleet or ice,” Panovich said. “That’s still uncertain.”

The storm system has yet to develop. Once it develops, Panovich and team will be able to better forecast how the storm may move as it nears the Southeast. Its exact path will help determine whether the greater Charlotte-area can expect to see rain, snow or sleet.

Needs to prepare

Depending on the timing and type of storm, there could be impacts to travel, electricity and the need for proper heating.

Ahead of the storm, ensure you have safe, power backups and a way to stay warm in the event of a lose of electricity.
