Impactful winter storm possible in central North Carolina next week

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – We have had two rounds of wintry weather already in the past month and a half, and another one could be on the way to central North Carolina.

The CBS 17 Storm Team is watching a storm system that will develop and move into central North Carolina by Wednesday.

Forecast models are coming into greater agreement on a potentially impactful winter storm across Central NC Wednesday through Wednesday night.

Right now, freezing rain (ice) is the most likely precipitation type, but that could change over the next couple of days.

What we know

A cold front will move in on Sunday night. Behind it, colder air will move in for the upcoming work week with temperatures below average. The cold air will be here, and moisture is expected to move into the region by Wednesday and Thursday.

The track of a low pressure expected to lift into the southeast remains uncertain. It has yet to develop, so it’s difficult to know this far out what we will see in the Triangle.

Models comparison

Both main long-range forecast models, the American and European, have been showing a mix of rain, ice and snow in the forecast for next Wednesday and Thursday in central North Carolina. Here’s a look at them side by side for next Wednesday night.

This will continue to shift around over the coming days. We’ll be able to begin fine-tuning the forecast details by late weekend or early next week.

February will end with colder-than-average temperatures, feeling like winter before we kick spring off in about a month.
