Icy roads remain after winter storm hits central North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — We are waking up to the coldest air of the season in central North Carolina on Thursday. Temperatures are in the teens and single digits across our viewing area.

Morning lows on Thursday could drop down to 5 degrees in some areas, which is why there is a Cold Weather Advisory issued through 9 a.m. on Thursday. Most areas affected are south and east of Raleigh, where radiational cooling will be greatest.

In Raleigh, the morning temperature should reach down to about 15 degrees, the coldest morning we’ve experienced yet this winter.

The wind chill won’t be much of a concern as the winds have died down.

There’s also a Winter Weather Advisory for most of central North Carolina until 9 a.m. due to the threat of black ice. The winter storm on Tuesday night dumped 1.5 inches of snow in Raleigh, and even more east, which could refreeze and cause travel issues Thursday and Friday mornings. Main roads look good to go this morning!

Thursday will be a little warmer, but still cold with plenty of clouds. Highs will be a few degrees above freezing. Friday and this weekend will be in the 40s. The 50s take over next week, so a warmup is coming.
