WILMINGTON — A popular musical by a Grammy and Academy Award-winning composer is opening in August.
Thalian Association Community Theatre will feature Stephen Schwartz’s “Godspell” at Kenan Auditorium mid-August. The musical tells the story of Jesus Christ, through parables, song and dance, comedy and more.
Based on the Gospel of Matthew, the show is portrayed by everyday people, in a modern setting. It follows a close group of artists, led by Jesus, who learn through his teachings of love and forgiveness, kindness and empathy.
The show’s soundtrack was made popular by songs like “Day, Day, Day,” “Prepare Ye,” “Save the People” and “By My Side.” They run the gamut from rock to pop to vaudeville.
Having in 1971, “Godspell” was nominated for a Tony in 1977. It was revived in 2011, with some of the song’s arrangements updated.
TACT’s show is being directed by its former artistic director Chandler Davis and will be be choreographer by Timothy Mills. It will run weekends, Aug. 16 through Aug. 25, with tickets costing between $22 and $34 here.
