Former Randolph County Schools employee arrested in 2005 sex offense case

The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office said a former school district employee was charged with sex crimes against a minor or minors.

RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) has arrested 50-year-old Gregory Winton Simmons in connection with a 2005 sexual offense involving a minor in Randolph County.

The investigation, conducted by the RCSO and the NC State Bureau of Investigations (NCSBI), began in January 2023 following a report linked to prior findings by the Moore County Sheriff’s Office and the NCSBI.

Authorities say the allegations stem from an incident involving Simmons, a former Randolph County Schools employee who left the school system on June 15, 2006. Detectives identified a juvenile victim during their investigation, leading to charges against Simmons for three counts of felony sex offense with a student.

On November 25, 2024, Simmons was located and arrested in Moore County.

He was transported to the Moore County Detention Center, where he was served a warrant. The magistrate issued a $500,000 secured bond, and Simmons’ first court appearance is scheduled for November 27, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
