Mecklenburg County is under a flash flood warning on Sunday due to the impact of excessive rainfall. Stay weather aware.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Flash Flood Warning was issued for central Mecklenburg County until 1:15 a.m. on Monday due to heavy rain from thunderstorms.

Radar shows that 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain have already fallen, with the possibility of 1 to 2 more inches. The impact of persistent heavy rain could lead to flash flooding in areas like Uptown Charlotte, Huntersville, and University City, impacting small creeks, urban areas, and low-lying spots.

A flash flood warning is also issued for the eastern portion of Chester County until 12:45 a.m. The areas impacted with potential flash flooding include the stretch of Interstate 77 that runs through Chester County. Use caution while driving during these hazardous conditions.

The stream gauge on Irwin Creek at Statesville Ave reached a flood stage of 9.0 feet and is rising as of Sunday evening. Mallard Creek at Pavilion Blvd has risen above the flood stage. The impact of rising creeks and streams is flash flooding in nearby neighborhoods.

Keep an eye out for rapidly rising water levels in creeks like Irwin Creek and Mallard Creek. And be prepared to seek higher ground if you live near streams that easily flood from the onset of heavy rain. So far this month, Charlotte’s rainfall totals are at 2.40 inches and this is just -0.01 off from normal.

Some of the main impacts from flash flooding include:

  • Swiftly rising water levels
  • Potential property damage
  • Road closures & detours
  • Threat to human safety

Stay weather aware and avoid driving through flooded roads if you’re in the warned area. It’s always important to turn around and don’t drown.
