HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A 2,000-plus-acre fire that broke out Saturday on Covington Drive in the Carolina Forest area is “believed to be human-caused,” the South Carolina Forestry Commission said Tuesday morning.
The commission said its investigation was not completed, but that the fire was not caused by a prescribed burn. It remained at 30% containment as of about 10 a.m. Tuesday.
“Containment lines, or firebreaks, have been established around the actively burning wildfire,” the commission said on Facebook. “The percent-containment value is an approximation of the confidence that incident command staff believe existing firebreaks can prevent the fire from spreading beyond the established lines. Work continues reinforcing and expanding those firebreaks around the perimeter.”
