Father expected in court after child shot

Police arrested 21-year-old Kono Holloway, the child’s father, and charged him with storing a firearm in a matter accessible to a minor.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A father faced a judge Tuesday morning after his 3-year-old son shot himself.

It happened on Oct. 19 on Trousdale Drive in east Charlotte. When officers arrived, they found the child suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, officials confirmed.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said two other people were inside the home at the time of the shooting. Police arrested 21-year-old Kono Holloway, the child’s father, and charged him with storing a firearm in a matter accessible to a minor.

An affidavit from CMPD said the “suspect admitted to putting the weapon into a bag and driving it to a secondary location” before officers arrived. The affidavit also notes the other person at home at the time said the child left the room they were in and was unsupervised for around five minutes before she heard “a loud boom” and ran to the child, finding them on the ground.

Holloway waived his right to a public defender Tuesday. He will be back in court for a disposition hearing on Feb. 5, 2025 at 9 a.m.

Detectives urged anyone with guns to properly secure them to prevent tragedies like this from happening.

“An event like this is a tragic reminder that you must secure your firearms, you must learn how to properly handle your firearms,” Maj. Dave Johnson said in October. “This happens far too often.”

Anyone with information about this shooting or any other incident is asked to call Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
