Excessive lead found in two faucets at Cabarrus County high school, officials say

CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — Excessive lead levels were detected in two faucets at Northwest Cabarrus High School, Cabarrus County Schools announced on Thursday.

The district sent a letter to parents notifying them of recent water testing results. The first faucet with excessive lead was found in the visitors concession stand at the football stadium. The other was a handwash sink in the kitchen.

Cabarrus County Schools said the concession stand sink showed 13.51 parts per billion (ppb) while the handwash sink was 39.52 ppb. Both results were above the state action level for lead, which is 10 ppb. Both faucets were taken out of service and the district plans to start repairs immediately.

Once the repairs are finished, the water levels will be retested. Neither faucet will be returned to service until lead levels are within regulation.
