Tadarian Neal and Asia Tapp, both 40, are accused of killing Jonathan Dockery.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — WCNC Charlotte has chosen to use this mugshot because of the nature of the alleged crime.
Two suspects who are accused of killing a Charlotte man in June will not face the death penalty in their upcoming trials.
Prosecutors said Thursday that they wouldn’t pursue capital punishment as a sentence for Asia Tapp and Tadarian Neal, both age 40. They’re accused of killing 32-year-old Jonathan Dockery at a south Charlotte apartment in June 2024.
Dockery was found dead by Medic at his apartment on June 13 at his apartment along Farmhurst Drive near Archdale Drive. They requested Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers to the scene, however, prompting the homicide investigation. Arrest warrants showed Tapp and Neal allegedly tried to steal Dockery’s cell phone using an “unknown metal instrument with a sharpened point”. Both are now charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
Days after Dockery’s death, his family shared their grief with WCNC Charlotte reporter Anna King.
“I just want my son back. My only son,” said Dianne Freeman, Dockery’s mother. “He has a good heart, he always stayed to himself, he doesn’t mind helping people — it just hurt.”
CMPD is asking anyone who may have more information to call (704) 432-TIPS to talk with a detective directly. Anonymous tips can be shared with Crime Stoppers online or by calling (704) 334-1600.
Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots. Â
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.Â
If your loved one was impacted by this incident, WCNC Charlotte hopes to make this process less painful with our More Than A Number initiative.
