Duke researchers one step closer to HIV vaccine

“[In] the last year…there’s been 1. 3 million new infections in the world,” said Dr. Mihai L. Azoitei, associate professor in the Duke Human Vaccine Institute and the Department of Cell Biology at Duke. “And so a vaccine, or a way to prevent this infection, would be the most efficient way to help these people.”

He said Duke and the Duke Human Vaccine Institute, along with the help of other institutions, have been working on an HIV vaccine for quite some time.

“My group has been working on this for the last six years, but we are building on a lot of previous work done at Duke and the Duke Human Vaccine Institute,” Dr. Azoitei said. “We are part of a big multidisciplinary team that has been working on this for over 20 years.”
