Millions of people take supplements daily, but experts warn they could do more harm than good. Here’s what doctors and the FDA say.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Millions of Americans take supplements daily but doctors say they may actually do more harm than good for our health.Â
Dietary supplements are everywhere but do they really work? Experts are divided on the topic, with most products selling promises that aren’t real.Â
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), over three-quarters of Americans take at least one supplement. Those include vitamins, minerals, herbs and probiotics. But not all supplements are created equal.Â
The FDA estimates there are 100,000 supplement products on the market. The problem? The agency doesn’t approve supplements before they hit shelves. Instead, it’s up to companies to decide if their products are safe.Â
Experts say only a tiny fraction of supplements have proven safe and effective and most supplements show little to no benefit. Instead, researchers say food is the best way to get the nutrients you need.Â
And while supplements might help if you have specific deficiencies, scientists warn that more isn’t always better.Â
