CHICAGO (NEXSTAR) – The Democratic National Convention kicks off in Chicago, amid fears of major protests, ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris formally accepting her party’s nomination for president.

Vice President Harris isn’t speaking until later this week but already she’s laying out the message she’ll pitch to voters at the convention.

“When you know what you stand for, you know what to fight for,” said Harris.

This week, Vice President Harris will make her biggest pitch yet to voters as she fights to become the next president of the United States.

“It is only as strong as our willingness to fight for it. And that’s what this campaign is about,” said Harris.

Thousands of Democratic diehards are converging on Chicago to rally their party behind the vice president.

“It’s going to be a real celebration of Vice President Harris and Governor Walz and the moving forward in this great country and the work that we’ve done so far,” said Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.)

Slated speakers include President Joe Biden, along with former presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

However, fears remain that protestors unhappy with the current administration’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war could distract from the convention.

“We very much are welcoming people to express their right to freedom of speech. And in fact, there will be an area that protesters can be in to express themselves,” said Duckworth.

Dr. Jill Biden is also scheduled to speak Monday night with former first lady Michelle Obama expected sometime this week as well.
