WILLMINGTON — An area film foundation received a boost in funds to help one of its programs that pair expert panels engaging in dialogue with the community following documentary screenings.

A $5,000 grant will support the Cucalorus Film Foundation’s Community Conversations program.

“By connecting engaging artists, humanities experts, and community members, the program sparks conversations on contemporary cultural issues that encourage empathy, understanding and new perspectives,” according to a press release from Cucalorus.

Executive director Dan Brawley thanked the North Carolina Humanities for this year’s funding.

“The Cucalorus Conversations series is the secret ingredient that elevates our events from just watching movies to being vital community engagement opportunities and a chance to learn, grow and connect,” Brawley said in a release.

The money will go toward extended discussions hosted after screenings at the 31st annual Cucalorus Film Festival, taking place this November. Humanities experts will koin indie filmmakers to engage in issues impacting lives daily. Topics will range from racial history to Indigenous culture, healthcare access to community-building; at least two discussions will center on historical events.

Filmmakers also can submit projects for consideration into the 31st festival by accessing FilmFreeway; residents of New Hanover County and the City of Wilmington can request an entry-fee waiver. The regular deadline is May 27 and the extended deadline is June 30. Learn more here.
