WEAVERVILLE, N.C. — A criminal investigation is underway after a fire at a Helene debris collection site Wednesday morning, according to Buncombe County officials.
Fire crews from the Weaverville Fire Department and the Reems Creek Fire Department were called to the site in Reems Creek around 4:20 a.m. The site, operated by Southern Debris Removal, was approved for a curtain burn on December 13. Officials said the approved burn operation had not yet started.
The fire impacted 32,000 cubic yards of debris. Officials confirm the fire is contained and does not threaten surrounding communities.
Personnel will remain on-site to ensure the fire remains contained. Debris contractors will monitor the site until there is no additional fire activity.
The NC Forest Service Law Enforcement Division is leading the investigation into the incident.
