CMS working to restore heat at elementary school after parent complaints

Tuesday was the coldest morning of the season so far with temperatures in the 20s across the Charlotte metro.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools leaders are aware of heating issues at multiple schools in the district after parents complained about cold classrooms.

At least two parents at Rama Road Elementary School complained that the school had no heat for two days this week. One parent said her daughter’s teacher had to wrap up in a blanket at the front of the classroom. Another said she brought heating concerns to the school’s attention after an October meeting with her child’s teacher. The woman said she called the school on Nov. 12 to ask why parents weren’t told the heat was broken.

“It was freezing when I was inside the classroom since then,” the parent said. “Parents get weekly reminders to send in a sweater for the classroom!”

The woman said she was concerned she’d have to pull her son from class because he’s recovering from pneumonia. This comes as the Charlotte area is dealing with the coldest temperatures of the season so far. Wednesday’s low was in the mid-20s. Numerous schools in Wake County were forced to dismiss students early on Tuesday due to a lack of heat.

A CMS spokesperson said Tuesday that the district was aware of the concerns and that repairs were underway. The district issued the following statement to WCNC Charlotte:

“CMS Building Services are working on the issues at Rama Road –  our technician and a contractor are engaged in the repairs.  Measures have been taken to reduce the cool airflow into the classrooms, and the contractor is working on a control issue between the equipment.   We are expecting the heat to continue to rise in the school to make it warmer for students and staff tomorrow.”

The spokesperson said they were unaware of any other CMS schools without heat; however, the district confirmed Wednesday morning that technicians were working to repair the heat at South Mecklenburg High School.
