Clerk shoots, kills man during robbery attempt in Pageland, SC

No charges will be filed against the clerk, according to the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — A store clerk shot and killed an armed robber at a convenience store on Saturday night, the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office said.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. at the Highway 9 Mini Mart & Tobacco store in Pageland when a man entered the business, put a gun to the clerk’s head, and demanded money. The clerk then fired multiple shots at the suspect.

Deputies found a man dead from gunshot wounds at the scene. Store surveillance video confirmed the clerk’s account of events, investigators said.

Sheriff Cambo Streater announced no charges will be filed after consultation with the 4th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, citing South Carolina’s “stand your ground” law. The law states individuals have no duty to retreat and may use deadly force if they reasonably believe it necessary to prevent death or great bodily injury.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) assisted in processing the crime scene. The investigation involved the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office, Coroner’s Office and SLED.

The identity of the deceased has not been released.
