Habitual Roots said it uses evidence-based methods to foster human connection in the Queen City.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In an era of increasing isolation, one Charlotte organization is taking an innovative approach to community building through wellness programs designed to bring people together.
Habitual Roots, a local non-profit, has developed a series of emotional wellness initiatives that range from yoga classes to hiking groups and book clubs. What sets them apart, according to co-founder Justin Ervin, is a community-driven approach.
“This is a really nice way to roll out a welcome mat,” Ervin said. “Here’s a healthy, friendly, welcoming community for you to come and hang out with, and there’s a lot of resources that come with it.”
The organization’s programs are particularly valuable for newcomers to the Queen City, offering an immediate connection to like-minded neighbors.
“We’re very intentional about how we place things and where we place them,” Ervin said. “There’s something for everybody.”
Sri Yelamanchili participates in programs with Habitual Roots and said the impact goes beyond just attending classes.
“You’re not just sharing about yourself, you’re listening to others,” Yelamanchili said. “That’s when you feel like you’re not alone, you feel like, ‘Oh my God, I’m just like anyone else.'”
What makes Habitual Roots unique is its bottom-up approach to program development. Rather than imposing predetermined activities, the organization lets community needs guide their offerings.
“A lot of things that we offer wasn’t our idea, which is the coolest thing,” Ervin said, “because it’s built by the community, for the community, and that’s something that’s really hopeful.”
The organization uses evidence-based methods in its programs, ensuring that its approach to wellness and community building is grounded in proven practices. The ultimate goal is to empower individuals while fostering stronger community bonds in Charlotte.
Habitual Roots’ programs are open to all Charlotte residents.
