Gyms prepare for uptick in January with many aiming for fitness goals as New Year’s resolution

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new year means New Year’s resolutions for many people, often including a commitment to working on healthy habits.

As gyms experience their annual January membership surge, fitness centers across Charlotte are developing strategies to help new members maintain their New Year’s resolutions beyond the initial enthusiasm.

Statistics from the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) indicate gym memberships typically increase by about 12% in January, creating both opportunities and challenges for fitness facilities and their members.

“We do see an influx of people coming in with their New Year’s resolutions,” says Michaela Byers, a trainer at Hive Fitness, where staff are preparing for the traditional New Year rush while focusing on member retention.

The challenge of maintaining fitness goals is familiar to many gym-goers. Sartura Askari-Roberts, a member at Hive Fitness, reflected on her previous attempts.

“I was not consistent, nor was I really fully committed,” she said.

However, Askari-Roberts approaches this year with renewed determination.

“It’s honestly just the challenge of challenging your body to do a little bit more each time, when you know you want to give up, you know you want to quit because you’re tired,” she said.

Dee Jackson, a trainer at Hive Fitness, emphasizes the importance of setting realistic expectations.

“We come in here wanting to run a marathon, want the size 4. All these unrealistic goals with small baby steps of staying consistent. And here’s the reward of staying consistent,” Jackson said.

The key to success, according to fitness professionals, lies in establishing achievable goals and maintaining a strong mindset.

“When you set those small goals, the more confidence you breathe, the better your mindset, and then the more you can maintain those goals throughout the year, and even set higher goals for yourself,” Byers explained.

Trainers recommend focusing on consistency rather than immediate dramatic results.

“It’s just doing little things consistently every day,” said Jackson.
