No one was injured in the avalanche.
GRAND COUNTY, Colo. — An avalanche that briefly trapped at least three people on Saturday afternoon was caught on video.
The slide happened on Gravel Mountain near Grand Lake just before 2:30 p.m. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center said that three or four people were caught in the avalanche, but were able to get out on their own or with the help of bystanders. It is believed to have been triggered by a snowmobile.
Cell phone video taken from just to the side of where the slide happened, shows several snowmobilers riding in the area just before the avalanche starts. You can see at least one person with an inflatable safety bag slide part way down the slope and a snowmobile without any one on it continue down the mountain a short distance.
This was the second avalanche reported in Grand County on Saturday.
One person was also killed in an avalanche near Berthoud Pass around 4:45 p.m. That slide was believed to have been caused by a skier. The name of the skier who died has not been released. It’s unknown whether that person was the one who triggered the avalanche.
An Avalanche Advisory is in effect through Sunday evening for most of the Front Range, the mountains of Summit County, and the Gore Range due to dangerous avalanche conditions.
The Grand County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging anyone who will be in the backcountry to carry the essential equipment and check conditions on the Colorado Avalanche Information Center website before decided where to go.
