Bird flu detected in North Carolina owl, officials say

WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — Bird flu has been detected in a great horned owl in Wake County, according to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

A spokesperson for N.C. Wildlife confirmed the case and said one hawk and multiple geese were found dead in the same area. It’s the first case of bird flu detected in Wake County since 2023.

Weeks later, in Sampson County, a commercial flock of turkey tested positive for bird flu.
