Arctic blast causing below-freezing high temperatures in the Triad

PIEDMONT TRIAD, N.C. (WGHP) — Our Arctic blast has officially arrived with temperatures in the low to mid 20s this morning and feel-like temperatures in the 10s. This morning’s temperatures are actually the warmest morning temperatures we’ll see until Sunday.

Temperatures dropped to freezing at around 9 p.m. on Sunday and they’ll remain below freezing until Thursday afternoon. High temperatures reach the upper 20s this afternoon but will feel more like the upper 10s and low 20s due to winds gusting between 20-25 mph.

Tuesday morning, the coldest of the arctic air looks to arrive with temperatures in the low 10s and feel-like temperatures in the single digits. Because of this incredibly frigid and dangerous cold air, cold weather advisories are in place for the Piedmont Triad from 10 p.m. on Monday through 10 a.m. on Tuesday. Afternoon highs reach the upper 20s.

Clouds will steadily increase into the afternoon and evening Tuesday and we’re watching the very low potential to see snow showers Tuesday night.

Incredibly dry air is in place associated with the arctic air mass sitting over us which will make it very difficult to see snow Tuesday night as most of the moisture will be to our east. In fact, there’s currently a better potential for snowfall in eastern NC. If we’re able to see any snow Tuesday night it would be less than 1 inch but again, the potential for any snow is very low.

Sunshine returns on Wednesday with morning lows around 13 degrees. Afternoon high temperatures try and reach the low 30s. Thursday morning temperatures will fall back into the mid-10s but afternoon temperatures finally reach above freezing with highs in the mid-30s.

Friday morning temperatures will be in the low 20s with afternoon temperatures helping thaw us out with highs in the low 40s. Saturday morning also starts in the low 20s but afternoon highs continue to get a little warmer reaching the mid-40s.

On Sunday, skies will be partly cloudy with morning lows in the upper 20s and highs in the upper 40s.
