CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Regulators in North Carolina are trying to stop companies from dumping toxic chemicals in drinking water, but the slow response from lawmakers could cost you money.
Right now, almost 4 million North Carolinians have dangerous levels of forever chemicals in their drinking water.Â
Republican environmental leaders are stalling to create better regulations. Last week, they declined to start the process of creating PFA standards.
Now, utility companies are having to spend millions to filter out the chemicals. Filter systems can cost upwards of $100 million per county. Businesses are left with no choice but to push some of that cost onto customers.Â
It’s still unclear just how much the increase could be. The commission is set to meet again in September.
