The former UNC and Myers Park HS quarterback is battling for the No. 1 spot in New England

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Former Myers Park HS and UNC star quarterback Drake Maye is expected to suit up for the Patriots in their preseason finale against the Commanders, which will air on WCNC Charlotte this Sunday night.

Maye, the No. 3 overall pick, is battling Jacoby Brissett for the top QB spot in New England.

The game kicks off at 8 p.m.

Maye’s former high school coach with the Mustangs has spent a lot of time reminiscing for reporters.

“Right away you knew the sky was the limit,” Scott Chadwick, now the coach at Clayton High School, said.

Maye was one of the nation’s top recruits at Myers Park.

But before that, he transferred to the Mustangs ahead of his sophomore season. Chadwick and assistant Josh McCown — a longtime NFL QB — knew pretty quickly Maye would be their man.

“Josh walks up to me and goes, ‘I’m assuming you want Drake in there now, right?’ I’m like, yeah, let’s do that,” Chadwick said.

Maye went on to throw for over 6,700 yards and 86 touchdowns in just two seasons, with his senior campaign knocked out by COVID.

“His junior year he threw 50 touchdowns and he had two interceptions,” Chadwick said. “He was the only quarterback in the country that had offers from Ohio State, Clemson, and Alabama.”

Maye first committed to Alabama but flipped to Mack Brown and UNC, where he enjoyed an All-ACC career.

But Chadwick says it wasn’t his stats Maye was worried about.

“My son Cody handled all of our stats and analytics,” he said. People would always question, why is Drake looking at the stat sheet at halftime? And it wasn’t to see how many yards he threw for. He was looking to see how many balls certain guys had caught. And he wanted to make sure everybody was taken care of.”
