HAWKINS COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Dirt track racing star Scott Bloomquist has died after a plane crash in Tennessee on Friday.
Bloomquist, 60, was the pilot and only occupant of the plane, officials with the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Nexstar’s WJHL.
The aircraft Bloomquist was piloting — a single-engine Piper J3 — crashed into a barn near Mooresburg at around 7:50 a.m. on Friday morning, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Crews with the county’s rescue squad arrived on the scene shortly afterward.
The sheriff’s office and FAA are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
Bloomquist, born in Iowa, was a nationally touring Dirt Super Late Model race car driver. He was inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame in 2002.
“We are devastated to report that one of the most charismatic and immensely talented to ever drive a Dirt Late Model tragically lost his life today in a small airplane crash at the family property in Mooresburg, TN,” reads a message posted by the Hall of Fame to Facebook on Friday. “Our deepest condolences to Scott’s family Ron, Georgie and Ariel; his loyal friends and all of his adoring fans. This is a tough one for all of us. God Speed.”
