WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — An explosive playmaker at Mount Tabor High School is considering two major North Carolina universities among his final three choices for a commitment.
Shamarius “Snook” Peterkin, a 6-foot-2-inches-tall 172-pound wide receiver, is one the best playmakers at his position in the nation.
Ranked by 247Sports as a four-star recruit, Peterkin is ranked as the 23rd-best wide receiver in the country and the seventh-best player in the state of North Carolina for the Class of 2025. He is also ranked as the 208th-best player in the country.
Peterkin has reduced his expansive offer list to three schools, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech).
Peterkin is scheduled to announce his commitment on Aug. 16 at 12:11 p.m.
Peterkin made an official visit to Virginia Tech on May 31. He visited UNC on June 14 and NC State on June 21.
247Sports Crystal Ball Projections predict that he will ultimately commit to NC State.
If the Wolfpack can land Peterkin, it would continue a recent trend of NC State building a recruiting pipeline for skill player high school prospects from the Triad.
“The visit went well,” Peterkin told 247 Sports of his June 21 trip to Raleigh. “It’s a school I’m really thinking about. They’ve been on me since my sophomore year and always keep in contact. They’ve worked to build that bond even stronger.”

Peterkin emerged as a star during his junior season at Mount Tabor, flashing elite playmaking skills and instincts whenever he touched the field.
During the 2023-24 season, Peterkin recorded 824 yards receiving and 12 touchdown receptions on just 42 catches in 13 games, according to MaxPreps. Not only did Peterkin average a staggering 19.6 yards per catch, but he also reached the endzone over 28% of the time that he caught the ball.
Peterkin also made major plays for Mount Tabor on special teams this season. He flashed speed and strength while returning a kickoff for a touchdown against East Forsyth High School.
During his junior season, Peterkin gained 210 yards on kick returns and 122 yards on punt returns.
Peterkin also displayed a knack for clutch plays on special teams when he blocked an extra point late to secure a Mount Tabor win over Davie County High School.
While being an explosive playmaker with the ball in his hands, Peterkin also showed great hands and ability to high point the football.
Peterkin consistently displays a nose for the endzone and the ability to create yards after the catch.
During his sophomore season, Peterkin was used as a versatile gadget player who saw playing time at quarterback, running back and wide receiver.
He completed 17 of 27 passing attempts during the 2022-23 season for 239 yards and one touchdown, according to MaxPreps. He also ran the ball 61 times for 322 yards and three touchdowns and caught 15 passes for 310 yards and 6 touchdowns.
