Closures and cancellations due to storm threats from Debby

SOUTHEASTERN NC — Downgraded to a tropical storm, Debby is set to bring anywhere from 16 to 20 inches of rain to the Cape Fear this week.

Due to potential extreme flooding, wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour and storm surge, multiple closings have been announced.

Here is what to expect in the tri-county region — check back for updates:

New Hanover County

New Hanover County Schools will be closed on Wednesday, Aug. 7.

  • Specialty High Schools WECHS, SEA-Tech, and Isaac Bear: The start date for specialty high schools will be delayed until school resumes. Families will receive a call from their principal about the new start date.
  • Remote Learning: Schools that are already in session — Codington, Eaton, Snipes, Freeman and Lake Forest — will shift to remote learning for Wednesday. Teachers will provide instructions and resources so that students can continue their learning from home.

Pender County

Pender County Schools will be closed on Wednesday, Aug. 7, and Thursday, Aug. 8 for all students and non-emergency staff. This includes all after-school activities and athletic events.

  • Penderlea School and Pender Early College will transition to virtual instruction on Aug. 7 and Aug. 8. Students will be provided with learning materials on Tuesday, Aug. 6. Students in third through eighth grades at Penderlea will engage in remote learning through Google Classroom, while students in grades 9-13 at Pender Early College will also participate in remote learning through Canvas.

Brunswick County

Brunswick County Schools will be closed for all student activities on Wednesday, Aug. 7, and Thursday, Aug. 8.

  • Brunswick County Early College High School will operate on a remote learning schedule on Aug. 7 and 8. Brunswick County Schools will continue to monitor road and facility conditions over the week. If conditions improve, Brunswick County Early College High School and all district student activities will operate on a normal schedule on Friday, Aug. 9, to be communicated to all stakeholders no later than 3 p.m. on Aug. 8.
  • For eleven and twelve-month staff members at all other locations: Aug. 7-9, will be optional workdays. All buildings will be open from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. for employees who choose to report to work. Following Board Policy 7550, employees may choose one of the following options: report to work; take accumulated compensatory time (classified staff only); take accumulated annual (vacation) leave; take leave without pay; telework is not an optionPlease stay tuned to our district website and Facebook page for all updates.
