WILMINGTON — A New Hanover County student faces charges, along with a 22-year-old male, due to a weapon being carried onto Hoggard High School campus on Tuesday.

A 17-year-old female was found in possession of the firearm and is being charged with weapon possession on a school campus and weapon possession by a minor, according to Lt. Jerry Brewer of the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies also arrested Javeon Harvin for possession of a weapon on school campus, selling or giving weapons to a minor, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and solicitation of a minor to commit a misdemeanor.

Brewer said there was an incident off campus that connected Harvin to the juvenile’s possession of a handgun, but couldn’t elaborate with further details. However, he didn’t suspect a gang connection.

According to New Hanover County Schools Superintendent Christopher Barnes, Hoggard school staff and the on-campus school resource officer from NHCSO responded quickly to the incident.

“I want to reassure you that all appropriate protocols were followed to ensure the safety of everyone on campus,” Barnes wrote in a press release late Tuesday afternoon. “The safety, well-being, and education of our students remain our highest priorities. We are firmly committed to fostering learning environments that are safe, respectful, and free from disruption. Any behavior that jeopardizes this commitment, particularly incidents involving weapons or acts of violence, will not be tolerated. Those involved have been removed from campus and will be held responsible to the fullest extent of the law.”

Barnes stated all appropriate protocols were followed and the student has been removed from campus, and will face disciplinary action and legal consequences.

The student’s name is not being released due to her minor status; Harvin has been given a $20,000 secured bond.
