Wildfire burns 70 acres, prompts evacuations in North Carolina

LENOIR, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A wildfire in northern Caldwell County prompted emergency officials to begin evacuations for several neighborhoods.

The fire had burned 70 acres as of Thursday night, but firefighters reached 95 percent containment as of 10 p.m.

Residents living in the Highland Meadows neighborhood were asked to evacuate as a precaution. At 9 p.m., the sheriff’s office announced those residents could return to their homes.

The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office has deputies at the scene helping residents evacuate. Caldwell County Emergency Services also confirmed they’re actively monitoring the situation and coordinating emergency response efforts.

Officials haven’t released details yet on how the fire started or the extent of the damage, but they’re urging everyone in the area to stay alert and follow evacuation orders.
