On March 10, 2025, the nonprofit CaroNova and a group of partners announced the development of a statewide action plan that will increase access to behavioral health services for North Carolina’s young people.
According to a press release, the “Changing Minds: The NC Youth Mental Health Action Plan” will bring together state legislators, government leaders, health care experts, philanthropic organizations, and community partners to identify existing gaps in service for youth behavioral health and outline a set of recommendations for the state. Initial funding is being provided by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation.
In North Carolina, the need to address these gaps is crucial. According to the press release, the state ranks 44th in access to youth mental health services. Last year, 47.2% — or almost half — of students with a major depressive episode did not receive a form of mental health services.
Part of CaroNova’s mission is to normalize mental wellness for young people across the state, guided by the belief that students’ mental health is just as important as their physical health. In line with this mission, CaroNova emphasizes the need for preventative services to tackle the rising youth mental health crisis.
The action plan also reflects CaroNova’s desire for collaboration across schools, communities, and health care.
“We are thrilled to bring together such a distinguished group of legislators, experts, and advocates for this critical conversation,” said Julia Beck, president of CaroNova, in the press release. “Our goal is to raise awareness, break the stigma surrounding mental health, and empower our youth with the resources and support they need to thrive.”
