Rebuilt Lowe's store opens after $12M recovery effort

Lowe’s in East Asheville will reopen in May, bringing back over 100 original staff members and hiring new employees.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — The Lowe’s store in East Asheville is set to reopen in early May, just seven months after Hurricane Helene forced it to close due to flooding and damage.

More than 100 original employees will return to work at the store. The company is now hiring to fill additional positions.

“This reopening shows how strong and resilient our Lowe’s team and the entire Asheville community are,” said Joe Strong, the store’s manager.

While the store was closed, Lowe’s set up a temporary location in a parking lot at 3 South Tunnel Road. This pop-up store sold essential items and offered tool rentals to help the community. It will remain open until March 18.

The rebuilt store will stay at its original address at 89 South Tunnel Road. It will have about 120,000 square feet of retail space and a 34,000 square foot garden center.

Since Hurricane Helene hit, Lowe’s has invested $12 million to help Western North Carolina communities recover.

This money has supported:

  • First responders
  • Local nonprofits
  • Small businesses
  • A special recovery fund for Western North Carolina small businesses

Lowe’s is also working with BeLoved Asheville and Appalachia Service Project to provide 100 temporary tiny homes for people who need shelter. Volunteers from several organizations, including the Home Builders Association of Greater Charlotte, Kelly McArdle Construction, and Habitat for Humanity, are helping with this effort.
