SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) — Parts of the Upstate and western North Carolina remain at an elevated risk of fires Sunday.

The National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg issued a fire danger warning early Sunday, which will last from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“Although winds will be notably weaker today, relative humidity will reach critical values again this afternoon,” said the NWS.

The warning comes after multiple fires broke out across North and South Carolina on Saturday, including multiple wildfires, some prompting evacuations in Pickens and Polk counties.

Some of those fires, including the one in Polk County, are still active. According to the North Carolina Forestry Service, the Melrose Fire, burning in the Saluda and Tryon communities, grew to approximately 400 acres with 0% containment as of 9 p.m. Saturday.

According to the South Carolina Forestry Commission website, the Pickens fire on Laurel Bridge Road was around 230 acres with 0% containment as of 3:06 a.m. Sunday.

Fires became so prevalent that the South Carolina Forestry Service and Gov. Henry McMaster issued statewide burn bans.

“That means you can and will go to jail for starting a fire outdoors in South Carolina. Period,” McMaster’s announcement read.
