(WGHP) — Tuesday, Feb. 4, is World Cancer Day. It’s to honor all those people fighting cancer and to remember those we’ve lost. A cancer diagnosis is frightening, especially for children, so in Mommy Matters, we want to look at how to talk to your kids about cancer.
First, be age-appropriate with your language. You can be more open with older children, but for younger kids, avoid using medical jargon. Just explain that part of the body is sick and needs treatment, and reassure them that doctors will do everything they can.
Give children information about the type of cancer and its location and then explain the treatment. You don’t have to go into every detail with younger children.
It may be helpful to show children visuals such as in books, pamphlets and websites to help them understand how the cancer will be treated.
Arm them with as many facts as possible and allow them to talk about their feelings. That will help children feel in control of a scary situation.
