CHIMNEY ROCK, N.C. — Significant developments are taking place in the hard-hit town of Chimney Rock, with increased activity in Helene recovery since the Christmas break. North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) crews are working tirelessly, with dump trucks and heavy equipment constantly in the area as they work on a temporary road.

NCDOT has scheduled a public meeting for Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. at the Lake Lure Classical Academy to present plans for a permanent road to Bat Cave as well as a permanent bridge to Chimney Rock State Park.

The Chimney Rock Village Task Force has been holding meetings on restoration plans, and is planning public surveys, interviews, and input sessions in the coming weeks to gather community feedback.

Meanwhile, the reconstruction of Main Street’s water and sewer systems is progressing, and officials aim to complete the work by spring, with hopes to have Main Street businesses up and running by Memorial Day weekend.

A staple during Helene recovery will also continue, town officials said. The WNC Main Street shops at the Tryon International Equestrian Center will become a permanent feature, with select shops operating a permanent location there along with seasonal vendors and market activities during the summer and fall.

“We all recognize how important it is to reopen the Park and the Village as soon as possible,” Mayor Peter O’Leary said in the news release. “This will show our progress, give us momentum and hope, and show our ability to get things done. This is so important as we look for funding, investors, grants, and other ways to rebuild Chimney Rock into an even more special place.”
