Could arctic blast bring snow to North Carolina next week?

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — We are two weeks into the new year, and it has been a cold one no doubt!

Only 3 of the 14 days so far in January topped out in the 50s. We’ve spent most of the first month of 2025 in the 30s and 40s. We also had our first round of snow in nearly three years on Friday, Jan. 10 with .7″ recorded in the Triangle. Many people want to know if it will snow again this month.

The current weather pattern in central North Carolina keeps the frigid air around through the end of January, giving us a higher chance of getting a weather system to bring us winter precipitation.

While the rest of this work week will remain dry, a cold front is expected to bring rain by Saturday, January 18. Winds will blow south ahead of the front, pulling in warm air before the cold arrives behind the front, so snow is not in the forecast this weekend.

Highs will be too warm in the 50s to bring us any chance of snow. However, frigid arctic air will take over the eastern half of the U.S. after this weekend.

The Climate Prediction Center forecasts a high risk of much below normal temperatures across parts of the Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and Ohio, Tennessee, and Lower Mississippi Valleys, Tuesday and Wednesday, January 21 and 22.

In central North Carolina, highs are forecast to stay in the low to mid-30s and mornings in the teens!

NEXT WEEK

A few models, including the American Model (GFS), have hinted at the possibility of wintry precipitation around January 21 & 22 (middle of next week).  However, there is too much uncertainty regarding where a front will stall offshore and the development of low pressure along the front.

Other models, such as the European model, keep the front well offshore and away from North Carolina, keeping us dry.

We are a week away, which means the CBS 17 Storm Team is monitoring trends in the forecast. The cold is here and will be here to produce wintry weather. The question is if moisture will set up with that cold to bring more snow to North Carolina. As of now, the 10-day forecast keeps the forecast for next week mostly dry and bitterly cold.
